Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts, giving them more volume and fullness. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed today – in 2016 alone, over 300,000 women chose to enhance their breasts through surgery. The procedure is considered relatively safe and can be customized to create the desired breast contour for each individual patient.

Women may seek breast augmentation for a number of reasons. Some may be unhappy with the size of their breasts and the way clothing fits. Others may have seen changes to the breasts after childbirth and nursing, and would like to regain their pre-pregnancy breast contour. Still others may desire reconstruction following tumor removal or mastectomy surgeries. Whatever the reason, Dr. Leber is here to make the process as comfortable and safe as possible, while providing you with the results you are looking for.

Breast Augmentation + Lift

Some women may find that breast augmentation alone is not enough to bring back the youthful contour of their breasts. While this procedure adds fullness and volume, it cannot improve the flattened upper breast pole that often results from pregnancy, breastfeeding, and gravity. For patients with these concerns, Dr. Geoffrey Leber offers a procedure combining a breast augmentation with a breast lift to restore a natural, beautiful look to the breasts.

Best Candidates

The best candidates for breast augmentation are women in good physical health with realistic expectations of what the procedure can do for them. Breast augmentation may be performed alone or in combination with another procedure like a breast lift to further enhance results. These procedures can:

  • Create fuller breasts proportionate to the patient’s body shape
  • Restore volume lost through pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Create symmetry in breasts that are different sizes
  • Reconstruct breasts after breast surgery

Whichever procedure you choose, Dr. Leber will work one-on-one with you to help determine what will best address your specific needs.

Types of Breast Implants

There are two basic types of implants used for breast augmentation today:

  • Saline Implants – These implants consist of a shell that is placed in the chest, then filled with a saline solution. One advantage to saline implants is that because they are filled after insertion, the incision for the surgery is much smaller.
  • Silicone Implants – Silicone implants require a larger incision for placement, but they tend to look and feel more like natural breast tissue.

Dr. Leber uses silicone implants on most of his patients, but there may be times when saline implants are a better option. Both types of implants come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, so they can be customized to the unique body shape and preferences of each patient. During your consultation with Dr. Leber, you will choose:

  • Type and size of implant
  • Implant placement (sub-glandular or under the pectoral muscle)
  • Location of the incision

About the Procedure

The specific technique used in your breast augmentation will depend on the type of implants used and where they are placed – either under the skin (sub-glandular) or under the pectoral muscle. Dr. Leber prefers to place implants under the pectoral muscle for most of his patients, because there is a reduced risk of skin rippling and scar tissue forming around the implant (known as capsular contracture). This type of placement also results in less interference during mammograms.

The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. After the incision is made, the breast implant is carefully placed and then the incision is closed. Most breast augmentation procedures take 1-3 hours to perform, but specific length is dependent on the patient and the type of technique used for the surgery.

Breast augmentation + lift are also performed as an outpatient procedure at Dr. Leber’s Phoenix office. In addition to implant placement, Dr. Leber will create the proper framework for the breasts, removing excess skin and repositioning nipples as needed. The entire procedure may take 2-4 hours to complete, depending on the specific techniques used.

Recovery and Results

The advantage to combining breast augmentation with a breast lift is that patients only need one surgical procedure and one recovery period, and recovery is generally the same for both procedures. Patients initially remain in recovery under observation by our staff for a period of time. Most patients are allowed to return home the same day as the procedure to continue recovering in the comfort of their own surroundings. You must have someone to drive you home, and it’s best if they can spend the first 24 hours with you, while the anesthesia completely wears off. Discomfort for the first few days after breast surgery is managed with oral medication, and a compression garment is typically recommended to promote healthy blood flow and minimize swelling.

Most patients are able to return to work and regular activities within 1-2 weeks, although strenuous exercise may be restricted for 3-4 weeks after surgery. Results are visible right away, and will continue to improve as the breasts heal. Both procedures are considered a permanent procedure, although the aging process may change the appearance of the breasts over time. If this occurs, additional procedures may be needed to maintain full results.

Results from breast augmentation or breast augmentation + lift are seen right away, but full results may not be evident until the breasts have fully healed. These procedures are considered a permanent way to resize the breasts, although the natural effects of the aging process may require additional treatments in time.
