What is Microdermabrasion?

Leber Skin & Laser CenterMicrodermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment to breathe life back into tired skin. The procedure uses a specialized tool to remove the outer dead skin cells of your face to reveal softer, smoother skin. Unlike harsh treatments like chemical peels or laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion is a way for anyone to see immediate results from a short, painless procedure. In fact, over half a million people chose microdermabrasion in 2016 to remedy their skin issues – it is equally effective for both men and women and works on most skin types and tones, making it one of our most popular treatment options.

Your skin consists of two primary layers – the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the top layer of skin that is responsible for protecting the deeper layers of skin. The outermost layer (or strata) of the epidermis is called the stratum corneum. It is made up of dead skin cells, which we shed constantly as more cells move to the surface. The stratum corneum is tough layer that only lets small molecules through, so even though you moisturize, cleanse and use anti-aging products, that topmost layer is still mostly dead skin cells that can make your complexion look uneven and dull.

 How Does it Work?

When you undergo microdermabrasion, the treatment targets your epidermis – and actually, only the stratum corneum. While other facial treatments are available that target imperfections on a deeper level, they utilize completely different tools and techniques, and often require a period of recovery for your skin to heal and regenerate.

Dr. Leber’s aestheticians use the DiamondTome™ Skin Resurfacing System which is the original medical grade crystal free treatment. that can reduce the effects of aging on your skin. The procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Benefits of microdermabrasion include:

  • The surface of the skin is softer and smoother
  • Visible imperfections (fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture, tone, dull complexion, clogged pores, blackheads, pigmentation irregularities, shallow scarring) are less noticeable or improved
  • Immediately after the treatment, your skin is more permeable, so any skin care products are more effective and can absorb more deeply

Immediately following your microdermabrasion treatment, your skin will feel softer and smoother. Skin will also appear revitalized with a healthy glow. We recommend repeating microdermabrasion treatments every month or two to maintain positive results. There is no downtime or recovery period, though Dr. Leber’ aestheticians will give you instructions on post-treatment care.
