Ptotic Breast Augmentation

Ptotic breasts are those that have begun to droop and sag. This process can be due to a number of factors, including breast feeding, weight loss and the normal aging process. There are varying degrees of ptosis that can occur, which in part dictates the procedure that will be most effective in achieving desired results. For some patients, ptotic breast augmentation will be sufficient, while others might need a combination of breast lift with implants.

Best Candidates

The best candidates for ptotic breast augmentation are women who would like to see a lift to the shape of the breasts at the same time they increase breast volume. Ptotic breasts can be categorized in the following ways:

  • Grade 1 Ptosis – Breasts sit below the inframammary fold, while the nipple sits above
  • Grade 2 Ptosis – Breasts are below the inframammary fold; nipples are at or below the fold
  • Grade 3 Ptosis – Nipples lie below the inframammary fold and point downward

Ptotic breast augmentation can be used to treat all of these positions, but the specific procedure will vary based on the grade of ptosis and the results the patient hopes to achieve.

About the Procedure

Ptotic breast augmentation includes breast enhancement through either saline or silicone breast implants. Implant choice varies based on the preference of Dr. Geoffrey Leber and the patient. The implants are usually placed under the pectoral muscle for a fuller, more natural look. Dr. Leber performs the procedure on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. Incisions are typically placed in the breast fold, under the arm or around the areola for minimal visible scarring afterward.

If necessary, Dr. Leber can perform a breast lift at the same time as the augmentation procedure. A breast lift changes the contour of the breast, lifting it to a more youthful position. The nipple may also be repositioned as necessary. Patients requiring a lift with the augmentation are usually those who are receiving a smaller implant or have significant ptosis that needs to be addressed.

Recovery and Results

Patients typically experience a degree of bruising and swelling for the first few weeks after ptotic breast augmentation. Discomfort is managed through oral pain medications. Stitches are removed from the incisions within 7-10 days after the procedure. Patients are usually able to return to work and regular activities within 1-2 weeks, although strenuous exercise is restricted for 6-8 weeks.

The results of ptotic breast augmentation will be evident immediately after the procedure and continue to improve over the following weeks as healing takes place. This procedure is considered a long-term breast enhancement treatment, with most implants lasting a minimum of 10 years.
