Unwanted body hair can be a nuisance. Fortunately, there are effective ways to reduce that hair today, lessening the need for shaving waxing or other methods of hair removal. A laser treatment can reduce unwanted hair growth from nearly any area of the face or body. Dr. Geoffrey Leber offers state-of-the-art laser treatments to his Phoenix area patients to give them the safest, most effective method of laser hair reduction today.
How does Laser Hair Reduction Work?
Laser hair reduction uses a special device that delivers laser energy directly into the hair follicle. The laser heats the follicle, damaging it so the hair eventually falls out. The damage then reduces future hair growth. While the heat damages the follicle, surrounding skin and tissue is left untouched, so the procedure is considered minimally-invasive.
Introducing the Lumenis LightSheer Duet
The Lumenis LightSheer Duet is one of the most advanced laser devices for hair reduction on the market today. The Lumenis LightSheer features a larger spot size and vacuum-assist technology that allows for faster, pain-free hair reduction in fewer treatments than standard laser devices. Dr. Leber’s medical aestheticians have used the device on dozens of patients over the years.
Candidates for the Procedure
While this particular device works on a wider range of skin tones and hair colors, the best results will be seen in patients with dark hair. This is because the laser targets the melanin in the hair shaft. This procedure is not as effective on red, gray or white hairs. Patients will also be asked to avoid tanning for at least two weeks prior to treatment to ensure the best possible results. This also includes airbrush and self tanning products.
Laser hair reduction is performed in the treatment rooms at Leber Skin & Laser Center. Some patients prefer to have a topical anesthetic prior to treatment to ensure comfort during the procedure, particularly for sensitive areas like the face and bikini line. Special eyewear is also provided to protect the patient’s eyes from any laser light.
A handheld device delivers laser energy directly into the hair follicles. When the laser penetrates the follicle, patients typically feel a slight sting, similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. If topical anesthetic is provided, there will likely be no discomfort. Treatment times vary based on the size of the treatment area, but even backs and legs can be comfortably treated in less than 30 minutes with this device.
Most patients will see positive results within a week or two after treatment. However, laser hair reduction only works on follicles that are in the active growing phase. This will not include all follicles at the same time. This means that multiple treatment sessions will be needed to achieve ideal results. In most cases, patients will see a significant reduction after 5-7 treatments. After results are obtained, an annual touch-up will keep the treatment area looking its best.
