Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)



Male breast reduction, is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men.  The condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men also known as gynecomastia, is common in men of any age. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or from the use of certain drugs such as steroids.

Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.

Gynecomastia is characterized by:

  • Excess localized fat
  • Excess glandular tissue development
  • A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue
  • Gynecomastia may be present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts

Dr. Leber most commonly removes the breast tissue with liposuction.  Direct excision of the fibrous breast tissue is also required in most cases through a small well concealed periareola incision.  In most cases the excess breast skin with contract after removal of the breast tissue.  Infrequently, the excess breast skin may require excision or reduction for the optimal outcome.  He bases this decision the patient’s anatomy and individual needs. This surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia; however some cases may be performed under local anesthesia an office procedure.
